Michael Liberty looking to purchase Maine newspaper groupPORTLAND, Maine.

An investment group has signed an agreement to purchase Blethen Maine Newspapers, which owns the Portland Press Herald-Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville and other media in the state.


The prospective buyers, Maine Media Investment LLC, and business associates Robert Baldacci and Michael Liberty. The senior operating partner is Richard Connor, a Bangor native who is editor and publisher of The Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Neither side disclosed the price or other terms of the agreement.

The Maine Investment group hoping to acquire Blethen Maine Newspapers

A former Maine senator, two well-known Maine businessmen and a longtime newspaperman with ties to the state are working to acquire Blethen Maine Newspapers, which includes the Portland Press Herald/ Maine Sunday Telegram. The investment group includes:



Robert Baldacci is Gov. John Baldacci's older brother. In April, he announced the formation of a new real estate development, investment and consulting company: the Baldacci Group, based on Middle Street in Portland. Baldacci was formerly vice president of Ocean Properties Limited, which last year lost its bid to redevelop the Maine State Pier.


Michael Liberty, who lives in Gray, is a Maine native, businessman and entrepreneur. In 1985, he was nominated by President Ronald Reagan as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America. In the 1990s, Liberty had a role in leading two job preservation efforts - at Hathaway Shirt in 1996 and Biddeford Textile in 1997.


Richard Connor, a 61-year-old native of Bangor, is editor and publisher of the Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) Times Leader. He serves as chief executive officer of the Wilkes-Barre Publishing Co., which operates four weekly newspapers. Connor began his newspaper career at the Hillsdale Daily News in Hillsdale, Mich., where he was named managing editor at the age of 21. He owns a camp in the Bangor area.

Michael Liberty and Investment Group still working to buy Blethen Maine

The key partner in an investment group that hopes to purchase Blethen Maine Newspapers said Friday that he has found a lead investor for the acquisition but has not completed all financing details.


Richard L. Connor, the leader of Maine Media Investment LLC, said HM Capital Partners, a private equity firm in Dallas, will be responsible for putting together the financing package for the purchase of the company.
